PROFILE

KEN IMAI

Born in Hyogo Prefecture, now based in Sapporo. Filmmaker and visual artist.

Originally pursuing a path in science, I enrolled at Hokkaido University — the alma mater of astronaut Mamoru Mōri.

During my studies, I began competing as a professional skier, traveling to competitions both domestically and internationally while immersing myself in filmmaking. I went on to found a ski film production company, the first rider-driven production of its kind in Japan, releasing six ski films and two snowboard films to widespread acclaim.

Seeking new forms of expression, I turned to the world of music and began working as a CG artist, producing music videos in full CG animation. The MVs I created in collaboration with HIFANA and KREEK were selected for numerous film festivals worldwide.

In 2020, I joined Cosmic Lab as a visual artist, working at the forefront of music and art. My projects span a wide range of disciplines, including live visuals, XR, metaverse experiences, installations, and visual system development. I have contributed to projects with artists such as EYE (Boredoms), Jeff Mills, and Hakushi Hasegawa. I was individually selected for 100 Japanese Motion Graphic Creators in 2020, and subsequently as a member of Cosmic Lab from 2021 through 2025.

In 2026, I shifted the center of my practice to Sapporo, embarking on a new chapter — pioneering creative territories at the intersection of science, education, and art, guided by a philosophy of "experience design" cultivated through years of multidisciplinary work.
